Pain Management physicians have a background in the neurophysiology and neurochemistry of pain and limit their practice to the evaluation and management of individuals with acute and chronic pain. They recognize the complexities of chronic pain and address medical, physical,
psycho-social, and environmental factors that affect an individual’s perception of pain and the attendant disabilities. They have advanced knowledge of the management of postoperative and acute pain.
Treatments:
Injections
• X-ray guided Cervical and lumbosacral epidural injections of steroids for herniated discs or disc inflammation to benefit patients with back and neck pain as well as for other chronically inflamed locations.
• Facet injections – A facet injection is a procedure that involves injecting medication into the facet joints, which are small joints located between the vertebrae in the spine. This procedure is used to treat pain and inflammation in the facet joints. Facet joint syndrome (arthritis of the facet joints), Spinal stenosis, Herniated discs, and Sciatica.
Radiofrequency ablation – Is a treatment option for chronic back and neck pain. It involves applying heat to the nerve, supplying the facet joint to “shut off” the transmission of pain signals to the brain. Multiple clinical studies show that radiofrequency neurotomy significantly reduces
pain severity and frequency for 1 to 2 years in the majority of patients.
Nerve and ganglion blocks – Nerve and ganglion blocks are procedures that involve injecting medication into specific nerves or nerve clusters (ganglia) to temporarily block or reduce pain signals. These blocks are used for various conditions, including chronic pain, nerve injuries, and
certain types of headaches.
Botox for Migraines – Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for chronic migraines, which is defined as at least 15 headache days per month lasting four hours or more. It is typically recommended for individuals who haven’t found relief with other preventive medications. It works by blocking pain signals from being sent to the brain from the peripheral nerves. The injections are designed to interfere with neurotransmission, reducing the release of chemicals that contribute to pain.
