Respiratory Care
The Respiratory Care Department at Calais Community Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient, emergency, and outpatient respiratory care, along with specialized pulmonary, cardiac, and sleep diagnostic services.
Our Respiratory Therapists work closely with physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to assess, treat, and monitor patients with a wide range of respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions, including COPD, asthma, pneumonia, congestive heart failure (CHF), and other conditions that can affect breathing.
Emergency & Inpatient Respiratory Care
Respiratory therapists are an important part of the emergency and acute care team, providing skilled respiratory support for patients experiencing breathing difficulties and other critical conditions. Services include oxygen therapy and respiratory treatments, airway management, non-invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation and ventilator management, respiratory monitoring, and assistance during emergency airway procedures and resuscitation.
We also provide ongoing respiratory care and education for hospitalized patients, working collaboratively with the healthcare team throughout their stay.
Diagnostic Services
Our Respiratory Care Department provides a variety of outpatient diagnostic services, allowing patients to receive important testing close to home:
- Pulmonary Function Testing (PFTs) to evaluate lung function and respiratory health
- Six-Minute Walk Testing (6MWT) to assess oxygen needs during activity
- Home Sleep Testing (HST) for sleep apnea screening
- Electrocardiograms (EKGs) to assess heart rhythm
- Cardiac Holter Monitor placement for continuous heart rhythm monitoring
