The term swing-bed refers to a hospital’s ability to use its beds to provide either acute (regular hospital care) or skilled nursing level care. Swing beds are beds that can be used when patients no longer need acute care but still need skilled nursing care and rehabilitation. If an illness or injury requires you to stay in the hospital for an extended period of time, you may reach a point in your recovery where you no longer need to be hospitalized yet you aren’t physically able to care for yourself at home. Our unit, located on the Medical-Surgical Unit, offers specialized care for these situations.
Our compassionate nurses and support personnel work with staff physicians to determine the best treatment plan for each patient. Because your needs are special, your treatment plan will be developed with your specific needs in mind. An activities director, social worker and rehabilitation personnel are available as needed.
Our caring staff will provide services to you until your condition is stable or your rehabilitation potential is reached and you are ready to go home or to another setting for additional care.
Some examples of problems suitable for care on our swing bed unit include:
- wounds that are not healing well or need special care
- pain management
- IV or nutritional therapy
- recovery from major surgery, joint replacement or vascular or abdominal operation
- repeated hospitalization
- a need of daily physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy
